Piano Lessons For Beginners – 3 Essential Steps Towards Piano Learning Success

For the new student taking piano lessons, follow these three steps to reach your full potential.

Find a good teacher - Piano Lessons for Beginners Essential Step #1

1- It is only natural to be anxious about your progress when learning the piano. A good teacher will recognise this and communicate with you on your development as you sail along on your musical journey.

A more attentive teacher might also e-mail students’ progress to parents, organize small in-house recitals to boost the students’ confidence or even publish newsletters for distribution to students under her tutelage as part of her efforts to keep a healthy flow of communication.

2- There are thousands of music compositions that been written over the course centuries, we will never be able to play them all.

As you learn new songs you will develop a taste for a certain style or have a small number of favourite composers that you love, a piano teacher has a duty to let you grow into a pianist with an open mind.

By promoting individuality in her students, they shall be able to play with pleasure any song on their own.

3- It goes without saying that you would want a teacher who will impart technical mastery on the keyboard. But there is more to piano playing than virtuosity.

Each piano piece has a history, their composers lived fascinating lives. A piano teacher who is knowledgable about the piano piece in particular and music itself in general can enrich your experience learning the piano.

4- Martha Argerich is one of the best pianists of our time. Sometimes I hear her on the radio midway through a song and I know it is her just by listening. It is only because she has no equal on the piano making her distinctive to anyone, not because of my listening abilities.

A piano teacher should have an acute sense of hearing. She should have the most sensitive ear able to detect the subtlest diviation in a piano play so that she can make corrections.

5- Has high standards. I am learning to play the piano at a local music school just around the corner not the Royal Music Academy, but if you are studying with my teacher you might think otherwise.

I will only pass a new piano piece if I play with the correct fingering, perfect expression, accuracy in timing and faultless intensity in my touch. She is relentless and persistent is fixing a student’s problem on the piano.

Know your theory - Piano Lessons for Beginners Essential Step #2

1- Music theory is an indispensable element in the performance of any musical instrument. It enhances the playing experience and appreciation of the music being played by the student.

2-By knowing the theory, the student shall be able to play any piece for their own entertainment without having a teacher around.

3- Think of theory as the alphabets of the language of music. We can not read a language wthout knowing the alphabets. The Rosetta Stone decrypted the enigmatic language of ancient Egypt because it was written in Latin which people could read and understand.

I have high hopes that my piano playing can promote similar understanding between cultures if I play with the pillars of music theory holding it all together.

4- For a person who has been lucky enough to realise the sheer wonders of piano music and driven to learn how to play it, you deserve to acquire the full musical picture. Learning theory is the illumination that will shed light on the picture.

Practise everyday - Piano Lessons for Beginners Essential Step #3

1- If you are pressed for time, just 15 minutes of practise will help. As you start practising you will be able to go on for 30 minutes or even an hour as you become immersed in the music. It is useless to practise for 3 hours one day then not practise for a week. No gains will be made.

2- If nothing else, practise playing scales or a few of Hanon’s finger exercise. Then you can try a few easy songs that you already know. Once you are in the zone, you can start practising that monstrosity of a piece you are trying to learn. By beginning with small steps you will not be overwhelmed with the task at hand.

3- Practise in short bursts of 15 to 20 minutes, then take a break. I realize that when playing the piano, the fingers do not tire as soon as the eyes do. I think it is the brain that needs the rest.

Drink a glass of water and do some light stretching for 5 minutes. When you come back, you will find that the phrase of quavers and crotchets you were struggling with before is not so difficult after all.

5- Practise at least 3 different songs in each session to stay engaged. Monotony can wear us down.

These three steps will help an aspiring pianist lay the foundation towards musical success.
